Abstract

Land use change has been a critical issue for rapid urban sprawl and modernization agenda in most developing countries. This change caused degradation the quality of environment in Metropolitan Region of Klang-Langat Valley, Malaysia Peninsular. This land use change had environmental crisis in urban area such flood, erosion and landslide. The objective research has identified the urban area and trend of land use change, environmental crisis, and how to manage the land use change and environmental crisis in Klang-Langat Valley Metropolitan Region.

Method research has used spatial analysis using image processing to find three objective and statistical analysis using cross table statistical for first and fourth objective. The reduce of the vegetation area has identified using NDVI (Net Degradation Vegetation Index) Erdas Imagine 9.1, with Landsat (Land Satellite) Image data series. This study was measure and evaluates the temporal changes in land use from year 1989 to 1990, 1990 to 1991, 1991 to 1993, 1993 to 1996, 1996 to 1998, and 1998 to 2001 in the Klang-Langat River Basin. The urban growth of building areas have identified from the change of the area of the urban land use using statistical data series.

The result analysis showed that the area in the middle and down stream of Metropolitan Klang-Langat Valley have many potential crisis of flood, landslide, and sedimentation. This condition caused shallow at the middle and down stream. Land use change at the periphery threatened the preserve of environment at the up, middle and down stream. Land use change can identify from reduce the forest area become settlement. This change can identify in Gombak and Hulu Langat region forest. Until now, the reduce of forest area with buildings caused change the river basin system in WP Kuala Lumpur, WP Putrajaya, Petaling, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang Region. The arrow trend of land use change was to Sepang and Kuala Langat and some places to Gombak and Hulu Langat near from hills. There is significant relation between reduce of vegetation area and urbanization. If the area of the urban had rapid growth so there were many area of forest will reduce. The urban land use change can cause the big of the surface runoff. It was shown with many urban areas have low vegetation index so the urban areas have potential urban crisis of flood, landslide, erosion and sedimentation. Many areas in upstream land use change from the function of recharge area to new development for many physical of buildings. In the next time, this area may have many environmental crisis because reduce of the capacity of the recharge area, storage ground water and aquiver.

Keywords: urban land use change, urban sprawl, urban crisis.
